Background information

Since 1968, the Thoraxcenter Biomedical Engineering group (previously: Experimental Echocardiography, headed by Prof. N. Bom) has been pioneering novel ultrasound technology and applications. Since then, we are one of the leading groups in technological developments in ultrasound imaging

Overall aim

Research on novel ultrasound technology, including:

• 3D imaging and transducers
• Advanced beamforming and high-framerate imaging
• Supersensitive flow and perfusion, functional ultrasound
• Segmentation and tracking
• Use of ultrasound contrast agents for advanced imaging

Research focus areas

We are working on the forefront of technological developments in ultrasound image acquisition, transducers, beamforming, and new imaging and applications such as 3D imaging, high-framerate ultrasound, functional brain imaging, shear wave elastography, blood flow and tissue perfusion.

4D-Flow Echocardiography for Diastolic Functional Imaging of the Left Ventricle

Developing the next generation of blood flow imaging: 4D-flow echocardiography. By fully quantifying cardiac hemodynamics we can learn more about heart failure and detect it earlier.

EFFECTS - Echocardiographic Tissue Stiffness measurements

EFFECTS delivers a technique for early diagnosis of heart failure by measuring the stiffening of the heart, through non-invasive ultrasound imaging.

MIFFY- Monitoring infant brain perfusion by echography

MIFFY delivers a technique for early diagnosis of brain perfusion failure by measuring the flow, stiffness and anatomy with non-invasive ultrasound imaging.

QUANTO-3D-myocardial-perfusion-imaging-with-echography

This project focusses on new echography to measure the blood flow inside the heart wall, such that the interventions in the Cath lab can be better monitored.
