Decision
A second opinion is the view of a medical expert other than your own physician. You can ask them for their opinion on a diagnosis or treatment plan, but they will not take over your treatment. If the second opinion differs from your physician’s opinion, it is up to you (and/or your child) to decide which treatment plan you wish to follow.
Advice
You do not need permission to seek a second opinion. However, we do recommend that you let your physician know that you are planning to ask for one. If you would prefer not to ask your physician who you should approach for a second opinion, you should consult your GP, a patient association or your health insurance company.
Your health insurance policy
You should always carefully check the terms of your health insurance policy, as not all policies cover the cost of obtaining a second opinion.
