We see many patients with rare diseases at Erasmus MC. Yet, for each separate condition, there are often too few people living in the Netherlands to be able to conduct sound scientific research and improve care. Therefore, collaboration in Europe is necessary which is why Erasmus MC considers it important to work closely together at an international level.
We do this, among other initiatives, within the specialized European Networks for Rare Diseases (ERNs). We are a member of 22 of the 24 European networks and we coordinate two of these networks. Furthermore, we participate in a close-knit network consisting of some of Europe’s leading university hospitals, the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA). The hospitals in the alliance have made significant contributions in the field of tertiary care, research and education, and rare diseases. These hospitals are situated in Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Rotterdam, Stockholm, London, Milan, Vienna, Leuven, and Aarhus. Soon Helsinki will also join in.
