Internal Medicine Laboratories

Our main mission is to pioneer innovation in research, education and care by bringing science to the patient. To achieve this objective, we aim to continually develop new (digital) technologies and innovations within the department in research, education and care.

About our Department

Our research

The department of Internal Medicine has nine sectors with a large variety of research topics. The nine sectors include Endocrinology, Nephrology, Pharmacology-Vascular and Metabolic Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Clinical Immunology, Allergology, Geriatrics, Acute Medicine and one young sector – Nursing Sciences. In addition, we have the Dietetics Research Line. All sectors have an appointed sector head who has delegated responsibility for clinical care and research. 

The department also allocates nine research laboratories: five endocrine laboratories (for the Endocrinology sector), a pharmacology lab and a lab for vascular and metabolic diseases (the Pharmacology and Vascular and Metabolic Diseases sector), a renal insufficiency and organ transplantation lab, including renal tubular disorders (the Nephrology and Transplantation sector), and two full diagnostic laboratories (an endocrinology diagnostic laboratory and a porphyria lab). All laboratories have a head of research.

Facilities

Our research laboratories are all equipped with sufficient basic laboratory equipment. We have ML-I and ML-II cell culture facilities, bio-analyzers, FACS machines, LC-MS/MS facilities and state-of-the- art equipment for genetic analysis, including high-tech advanced machines for high throughput genetic analysis. 

Collaborations

The Department of Internal Medicine actively seeks collaboration with multiple national and international research groups.

Education

BSc & MSc students

The Department of Internal Medicine is committed to providing the Erasmus MC and national and international students and colleagues excellence in teaching and up-to-date education. We currently conduct an extensive array of training activities, including the training and education of medical doctors, medical students, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, medical specialists, Master degree students and under- graduate students in all aspects of the fields covered by the different sectors of our department.
