About W.H. (Wendy) Oldenmenger, PhD

Introduction

I started my research based on my clinical experiences. Patients’ pain management was often inadequate due to both professional- and patient related barriers. I set up and performed several studies that resulted in my PhD thesis in 2012. My postdoctoral research build upon the results of these studies.

As a coordinator of oncology nursing research, we have two main research lines

  • signs and symptoms of the cancer and/or treatment
  • transitions in care

In both lines we want to help patients and their loved ones to deal with the consequences of the cancer(treatment) to improve their quality of life.

Field(s) of expertise

I am a registered nurse and health scientist.  I am enthusiastic about cancer nursing, and more specific symptom management and palliative care. Not only in daily practice, but also to improve this, and demonstrate to what extent our interventions are evidence-based.

Currently, I work as an assistant professor of pain and palliative care at the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, where I’m also the coordinator of (hemato-)oncology nursing research. With my research, I focus on person-oriented care for people with cancer and their loved ones so that they can function as well as possible in their own environment. I am also coordinator of oncology nursing research at the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute since 2014.

In addition, I was a Board Member of our National Cancer Nursing Society for six years. Currently I am a member of the Executive Board of the European Oncology Nursing Society (2018 – 2023) and a Member of the Board of Directors of the European Cancer Organization.
