About D.H.J. (Dirk) Poot, PhD

Introduction

I am an associate professor the department of Radiology. My main topics are quantitative MR image acquisition and
reconstruction.
Quantitative MRI can greatly improve clinical diagnosis by visualizing subtle tissue changes. Unfortunately, currently the scan time
of quantitative MRI examinations is often too long. This is uncomfortable for the patients and causes failed scans due to patient
motion. My main interest is to substantially accelerate quantitative MRI examinations and also to reduce the sensitivity to motion.
The research focusses on two complementary tracks: 1) Improving the acquisition to efficiently encode the medically relevant
information into the observations. 2) Using smart mathematical methods to recover medically relevant images from the
observations.

Field(s) of expertise

My main expertise is in the domain of techniques for MRI acquisition and reconstruction. Mathematically modelling the acquisition
process and using that to improve the diagnostic information in MR images.

Education and career

I studied Applied Physics at Delft University of Technology, obtained my PhD degree at the VisionLab of Antwerp University. After
that I started at the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam of the Erasmus MC, first as PostDoc and later as assistant professor.
