About F. (Felix) van Lier, MD, PhD

Introduction

After being trained as an Anesthesiologist and ICU specialist, I returned to the Erasmus Medical Center to combine clinical research with care for vascular surgery patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. My research focusses on the idenfitication of and modicfication of perioperative myocaridal injury and infarction.

Teaching activities

As a staff anesthesiologist teaching is an integral part of my daily work. Our speciality is best learned by not only having knowledge but to apply this knowledge in daily practice. Therefore, I participate in the daily supervision and bedside teaching of interns, but also for residents and nurse anaesthetists. I supervise our residents in their third year of training on a monthly basis where we discuss recent anaesthesia literature. Furthermore, I am responsible for two courses for medical students in their second year on the interpretation of the ECG and the cardiovascular management of surgical patients.

Other positions

Member Medical advisory board, Equipe healthcare
Reviewer for several Anest

Scholarships, grants, and awards

I have received grants from several societies including the European Society for Anaesthesiology and The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development

More

During the last five years my own research has focussed on the pathogenesis, prevention and long-term effects of perioperative myocardial injury. Our group has published several papers on the relationship between perioperative anaemia and the incidence of myocardial injury, the possible ethology and long-term effects of myocardial injury in the perioperative period. More recently we use large amounts of 'Big Data’ to predict myocardial injury based on millions of intra- and postoperative haemodynamic data. A substantial part of our recent papers were published in the two major anaesthesia journals (Anesthesiology, British Journal of Anaesthesia). Besides my own research I am the local principal investigator for several multi-centre cohort and interventional studies from the European Society of Anaesthesiology Clinical Trial Network and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Clinical Trial Network.
