About J.M. (Max) Kros, Prof. dr.
Introduction
Professor Johan M. Kros graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Amsterdam in 1986. He subsequently worked at the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research on the development of the corticospinal tract. During 1987-1992 he trained in Clinical Pathology and Neuropathology at the Dept. of Pathology of the Erasmus University Hospital, Rotterdam, where he founded a brain tumor bank in 1988. He received his PhD from the Erasmus University in 1992 and subsequently took a research fellowship in the Department of Neuropathology of the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. Since 1995 he has been in charge of all fields of diagnostic Neuropathology in the Dept. of Pathology of Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, where he took the chair in Neuropathology in 2006. Since 2013 he is deputy Chair of the Department of Pathology of the Erasmus MC. Recently Prof. Kros was appointed as advisor/consultant at the Princess Maxima Center for pediatric neuro-oncology in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Besides his diagnostic and teaching responsibilities prof. Kros is PI in funded research topics including the role of the immune response in cerebral metastasis of common cancers, neovascularization of gliomas, and the immunological aspects of Alzheimer's disease. For all these topics there are local, national and international collaborations. Professor Kros is member of the editorial board of the WHO edition on tumors of the CNS since 1995, and chairs the Neuropathology Review Panel of the EORTC Brain Tumour Group since 1996. He has served as Chair of the Dutch Neuropathology Society and is organizer and teacher of various international courses among which the brain tumor course of EURO-CNS, and courses in neuropathology in China, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, and holds a position of visiting professor in Surabaya. Professor Kros is member of editorial boards of a number of neuropathology journals.
