About R. (Robert) Kraaij, PhD
Introduction
Robert Kraaij is a senior scientist at the Genetic Laboratory of Internal Medicine / Population Genomics. He has been involved in the implementation of large-scale Next Generation Sequencing projects within the Human Genomics facility, including large scale exome and RNA sequencing projects within the population-based Rotterdam Study cohort, as well as small scale family-based sequencing projects. In 2012, he started a metagenomics research line to investigate the gut (stool) microbiome in health and disease. He has implemented sample collection, profiling techniques (metagenomics, 16S and 18S rRNA amplicons, and microbiome array technologies) as well as analytical approaches for microbiota of stool and other niches such as the skin, nasopharynx, and urine.
Two large 16S rRNA stool microbiome datasets (1,427 elderly individuals from the Rotterdam Study cohort and 2,111 children from the Generation R Study cohort) now form the basis of many collaborations and personal research lines on GWAS of gut microbiota (MiBioGen consortium), the gut-brain-axis, and the biology of the gut microbiome.
