About Dr. K. (Klazina) Kooiman, PhD

Introduction

Klazina Kooiman is an associate professor and is head of the Therapeutic Ultrasound Contrast Agent Group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC. Her group uses ultrasound contrast agents, i.e. microbubbles of 1-10 µm in size, for local drug delivery and ultrasound molecular imaging. Recent work includes vascular drug delivery using ultrasound-activated microbubbles to treat cardiovascular disease and cancer. She started a new research line on sonobactericide which is the enhancement of bactericidal action aided by ultrasound-activated microbubbles where she focuses on infective endocarditis. Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening bacterial infection of the heart valves and surrounding tissue and can involve prosthetic material in the heart. For both research lines the focus is on the relation between the ultrasound contrast agent behavior, the cell, and the drug.

Field(s) of expertise

  • Microbubble-mediated drug delivery
  • Ultrasound molecular imaging
  • Ultrasound contrast agent
  • Microbubble production and characterization
  • Sonoporation
  • Sonobactericide

Education and career

Kooiman studied Bio-pharmaceutical Sciences at Leiden University, the Netherlands, and obtained her MSc degree with honors (cum laude) specializing in pharmaceutical technology. From 2005 to 2010, she was a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC, the Netherlands. On January 19, 2011, she obtained her PhD degree on the topic of ultrasound contrast agents for therapy. She held a postdoctoral position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC, until January 2015 focusing on the application of ultrasound contrast agents for drug delivery and molecular imaging. She was awarded the ICIN fellowiship 2012 (now Netherlands Heart Institute Fellowship) and because of this fellowship, she became a visiting scholar in the Center for Ultrasound Molecular Imaging and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, PA, USA. In total, she worked in Pittsburgh for 11 months. In February 2015 she was appointed as a staff member at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She became Principal Investigator and head of the Therapeutic Ultrasound Contrast Agent Group in October 2015.
