About dr. S. (Stijn) Keereweer, PhD

Introduction

As a head and neck oncologic surgeon, I am frequently confronted with the devastating consequences of head and neck cancer. I have dedicated my career to this vulnerable group of patients and their loved ones. In general, only half of all head and neck cancer patients survive the first 5 years. This means that I frequently share emotions of disappointment, grief, and loss with my patients and their family. These experiences form the foundation for my urge and feelings of responsibility to keep improving the treatment of our patients. I am convinced that high-standard research is the only way forward. Therefore, I have dedicated much of my time to research since the start of my clinical career.

Education and career

I am a fully trained head and neck surgeon and I received a Cum Laude PhD in fluorescence image-guided surgery in head and neck cancer, for which I set up a new multidisciplinary, multicenter research line. From 2011 to 2016, I finished my specialist training as an Otorhinolaryngologist at the Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, followed by a fellowship Head and Neck Surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. During those years I always remained closely involved in preclinical studies with various researchers from the LUMC and Erasmus MC, resulting many national and international research papers, various book chapters and multiple awards. I am an active member of several (inter-)national research societies and participated in international conferences, clinical courses and workshop where I further improved my knowledge on head and neck cancer and on clinical trial design.
