About F. (Francis) Kalloor Joseph, PhD

Introduction

My research focuses on quantitative imaging of deep tissues, a critical aspect in both diagnostic processes and therapy monitoring. I use optical and acoustic imaging for this purpose. At present, my work involves quantifying the composition of arterial plaque to assess the risk of rupture. Additionally, I am developing methods to distinguish tumors from healthy tissue, enhancing the accuracy of medical diagnoses and treatments

Field(s) of expertise

Currently, my research is focused on designing application-specific probes for integrated ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. I am developing algorithms that harness information from these imaging methods for accurate tissue quantification. The development of custom probes tailored for clinical applications, coupled with advanced tissue quantification algorithms, is central to my research.

Education and career

I hold a Bachelor's (2011) and Master's degree (2013) in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Biomedical imaging at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad in 2018. During my PhD period, I also received a Fulbright doctoral research fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center (2016-2017).

Post Ph.D., I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Twente from 2018 to 2021. My research contributions and ideas were recognized with the NWO Veni grant in 2021. Subsequently, I joined the University of Twente as an Assistant Professor.

In September 2023, I advanced my academic career by becoming a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at Erasmus MC aiming for clinical translation of my research.
