About S.I. (Sonja) Buschow, PhD

Professional Background
Sonja Buschow studied Medical Biology at Utrecht University and at this location later also obtained her PhD on the mechanisms of formation, secretion and targeting of Dendritic cell (DC) and B cell exosomes. In 2006 she moved to the UMC St Radboud/ RIMLS in Nijmegen where she applied mass spectrometry and transcriptome analysis to study the molecular dynamics of phagosomes, DCs and blood cells to facilitate the use of dendritic cells for cancer immunotherapy. In 2014 she started at the Erasmus MC department of Gastroenterology & hepatology to develop antigen-based immunotherapy for hepatitis B infection and related liver cancer. At this department she now leads her own research group.
Research Interests
Sonja Buschow’s main research interest is (the regulation of) antigen presentation in professional antigen presenting cells as well as diseased target cells. Knowledge obtained she aims to apply to the development of immunotherapy in general, and more specifically for the development of a therapeutic vaccine for chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and HBV related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and also for other gastrointestinal diseases including Pancreatic ductal adeno carcinoma (PDAC).
