About D. (Daniel) Bos, MD, PhD

Introduction

Current position
I hold a position as Associate Professor in the department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine and the department of Epidemiology.

Current research interests and goals
My research is dedicated to the elucidation of the etiology and pathophysiology of arteriosclerosis, and the clarification of the contribution of arteriosclerosis to clinical neurovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases, with a strong emphasis on the use of medical imaging. Using population- and patient-based approaches, I specifically aim at obtaining relevant imaging-based biomarkers for improved understanding of arteriosclerosis and improved prediction of the abovementioned diseases, and at identifying potential targets for intervention strategies.

I have centered the work of my group around three research-lines.

The first is focused on intracranial arteriosclerosis. In this field, I performed pioneering work on the relevance of intracranial arteriosclerosis in stroke and dementia.

The second research line revolves around advanced atherosclerotic plaque imaging. Using advanced medical imaging I aim to further understand development of atherosclerosis and the value of assessing plaque composition and plaque morphology in the prediction of neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

The third research line focuses on optimization of cardiovascular imaging techniques and analysis. This research line revolves around the early detection of vascular disease, by maximally leveraging existing medical imaging examinations. By using novel methods for image-analysis (e.g. machine-learning algorithms), I aim to obtain more sensitive and more accurate imaging markers of vascular disease.

The multidisciplinary aspect of my research allowed me to establish close collaborations with numerous departments within the Erasmus as well as outside of the Erasmus MC with renowned institutions which allow a wide utilization of my research. In this light I also hold an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at Harvard School of Public Health, and an appointment as Professor in Neurovascular Imaging at KU Leuven.

Teaching activities

My teaching activities have rapidly increased during the past years and range from lectures at the Junior Med School to intensive tutoring of MSc-students in Medicine or Health Sciences and supervision of PhD-candidates.

Specific highlights of my teaching activities include the following. First, since 2016, I am  giving one of the opening lectures of the prestigious Junior Med School-programme for talented high school students that are interested in studying Medicine and performing scientific research. Second, since 2016, I am part of the teaching staff of the summer course entitled “Study design in Clinical Epidemiology” in the Master of Public Health-programme at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Third, since 2018, I have become part of the core staff of the course “Clinical translation of Epidemiology” which is part of the Master of Science-programme provided by the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences.
