What is the motivation for this research?
Optimizing care for (alcohol) intoxicated patients and optimizing identification of hazardous alcohol use among patients in the Emergency Department.
Hazardous alcohol use and acute alcohol intoxication have a widespread range of possible short-term and long-term harmful effects for the patient and are associated with extensive impact on our healthcare system. Therefore we investigate the incidence, characteristics and health care costs of intoxications seen in the ED.
Also, we investigate the use of video intervention in the high risk group of patients presenting with acute alcohol intoxication in the ED. Further, the ED is a location for the early identification of problematic alcohol use. Therefore we investigate methods of screening for hazardous alcohol use in the general ED population.
What is the aim?
Our aim is to investigate if intervention, using a standardized educational video, causes reduction in (problematic) drinking patterns in the high risk population of patients presenting with acute alcohol intoxication to the ED. Further, we investigate the reliability of the AUDIT questionnaire compared to the PEth marker value for the screening for hazardous alcohol use in the general ED population.
How will you perform this research?
We performed three studie:
- Intoxications in the Emergency Department: incidence, characteristics and health care costs.
- E-health: Does Video-intervention reduce future alcohol consumption in patients presenting with acute alcohol intoxication in the ED? (Vintoxicated study; multicentre study)
- Screening for hazardous alcohol use in the Emergency Department; PEth marker compared to AUDIT questionnaire. (Champagne study)
