Our research
The Erasmus MC’s Center for Pain Medicine has several areas of research especially focussing on but not limited to
1. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
2. Neuromodulation (neurostimulation and intrathecal baclofen)
Pain research at the Erasmus MC covers a broad area of epidemiologic research to unravel the pathophysiology of pain, as well as research that focuses on the development and improvement of diagnostics and therapeutics.
Historically, pain research has been very well developed at the Erasmus MC. Individual departments have made their name and found fame. Although cooperation between individual departments is already well-developed, we expect that this increased cooperation within the Academic Center of Excellence will create benefits by bringing together experts from different fields of pain research within the Erasmus MC, creating a synergistic effect and bringing the pain research to an even higher level.

Collaborations
The Center of Pain Medicine – together with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation Medicine (Physiotherapy), Psychiatry (Medical Psychology), Family Medicine and Plastic Surgery – founded the Pain Medicine Academic Center of Excellence (ACE). In 2020, the Center of Pain Medicine will fuse with the SPINE ACE.
The Center of Pain Medicine Scientific engages in national collaborations with:
- Utrecht (UMCU Center of Pain Medicine; Dr Mienke Rijsdijk, Head).
- Leiden (LUMC Department of Neurology; prof. dr. M. Ferrari).
- Amsterdam (VU Department of Epidemiology; prof. dr. M. van Tulder, prof. dr. R. van Ostello).

The Center of Pain Medicine’s international scientific collaborations include:
- Board membership in the International Research Consortium for CRPS (an organization with more than 70 individual members and 40 participating research sites, founded in 2015 to directly and indirectly facilitate and support research on Complex Regional Pain Syndrome).
- Aarhus University Denmark (dr. Kaare Meijer, Staff Specialist, the Departments of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery; Aarhus University Hospital postdoc, the Department of Clinical Medicine).
- McGill University (prof. dr. Sylvain Baillet, Departments of Neurology & Neurosurgery and Biomedical Engineering; and the Department of Computer Science at the Montreal Neurological Institute).

We conduct as much research as possible in PhD tracks, within our department and/or in close collaboration with other Erasmus MC departments (the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neuroscience, (Clinical) Immunology, and Medical Psychology).
