Massimo Palmarini new Head of the Viroscience Department

As of 1 June 2025, Prof. Dr. Massimo Palmarini will take over as Head of the Department of Virology, succeeding Prof. Dr. Marion Koopmans.

Massimo: ‘Erasmus MC has a strong reputation in virology worldwide – I look forward to contributing to that in the coming years.’

Professor Massimo Palmarini brings with him more than thirty years of experience in virological research, twenty years of which in management positions. Since 2010, he has been Director of the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. He was also Professor of Virology at the University of Glasgow.

‘After twenty years in Glasgow, I felt it was time to use my experience in a new environment,’ says Massimo. ‘I am very much looking forward to getting started at Erasmus MC. Clinical care, diagnostics and fundamental research come together here, creating many opportunities for innovations that benefit both patients and society. Erasmus MC has a strong reputation in the field of virology worldwide and I look forward to contributing to that in the coming years.’

Passing the baton

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Marion Koopmans, the Virology department grew into an internationally leading center. The department and Marion played a crucial role, especially during the corona pandemic. Marion will remain associated with the department for several years to come., Marion.
