With great sorrow and deep sadness, we learned on Thursday, November 28, of the passing of our dearly beloved and dedicated colleague Mathis Funk. Unfortunately, he was only 34 years old.
Mathis had been working as a postdoc at the Viroscience department since February 1, 2019, and was a driving force in the fundamental influenza research within Dr. Mathilde Richard’s group. He conducted groundbreaking research on the genetic basis of the emergence of dangerous variants of avian influenza viruses.
With his passion for research, his talent for bioinformatics, and his engaging personality, he quickly became a go-to person for many within and outside the field of influenza virus research.
His humor, creativity, positive energy, and genuine involvement left a lasting impression on everyone who worked with him.
We will miss him tremendously.
