About M.L.P. (Maarten) Dirkx, PhD

Introduction

Dr.ir. Maarten Dirkx is working as a medical physics staff member at the department of Radiotherapy of the Erasmus MC since 1997.

His work focusses on the safe implementation of new, advanced treatment delivery and verification techniques in clinical practice and on personalization of the patient treatment.

Besides his clinical and research tasks, he is responsible for the training program of medical physics residents at the Erasmus MC.

Field(s) of expertise

Radiation therapy, treatment plan optimization, automation, image-guided and adaptive radiotherapy, patient QA.

Education and career

In 1990, Maarten Dirkx graduated in physics at the Technical University of Eindhoven.

For a 1.5 years period, he was working on a research position of the Dutch Organization of Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) at the Institute of Plasmaphysics Rijnhuizen in Nieuwegein, applying Thomson scatter to measure the temperature in high-pressure plasmas.

In 1992, he started working as a research physicist at the department of Radiation Oncology of the Erasmus MC. During a three years radiotherapy physics residency, he spent three months at the Physics Department of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (USA), headed by prof. B.A. Fraass, performing research on the optimization of treatment plans using static intensity modulation.

Since 1997 he has a permanent staff position as medical physicist in the department of Radiotherapy of the Erasmus MC.

In 2000 he defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Static and dynamic beam intensity modulation using a multileaf collimator’ at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Teaching activities

Maarten Dirkx is the acting educator for medical physicists in training in the field of radiotherapy at Erasmus MC.
