What we do
About our project
Medication management for patients in the last phase of life is regularly underperformed. Many symptoms contributing to the quality of life are often underreported and about 83-97% of the patients use multiple potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). Medications can become potentially inappropriate due to, for example, changed treatment objectives because of a limited life expectancy. Up to now, few research have been done to the discontinuation of medication and overall symptom management in patients in the last phase of life.
The iLIVE medication study is an international, multicentre, uncontrolled before-after study in which a clinical decision support system (CDSS) generates alerts on medication management. The aim of the study is to examine whether the use of the CDSS contributes the quality of life of patients and if it contributes to create awareness among physicians and support them in medication management. The medication alerts are based on scientific literature, currently available guidelines and pharmacological insights. This study is part of a larger international cohort study, the iLIVE project, which investigates the concerns, expectations and preferences for care of patients with a limited life expectancy and their relatives.
